Two men survived after a light aircraft crashed at more than 100mph on North Yorkshire moorland, a report claims.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said the crew were lost and crashed the small Cessna plane on Ingleborough Moor.
A 55-year-old instructor and his pupil were on a training flight from Blackpool when the accident happened on 21 March.
Both were badly injured and had been rescued four hours after the collision.
The plane was on a night cross-country navigation training flight when it went off course.
The men flew into rising ground at a speed of more than 100 mph in a remote area.
Rescue teams were alerted when the men contacted air traffic control at Blackpool via a mobile phone. They were located and taken to hospital for treatment.
The AAIB said: "It was fortuitous that the crew had a mobile phone with them and were able to call for help from their remote accident site.
"The crew were both seriously injured but the outcome could have been worse."
