A new joint investigation by the BMJ and BBC Newsnight published today has raised further concerns over the exposure to dangerously high levels of toxic metals from failing hip implants. The risks have been known and recorded for many years. New guidance from the MRHA issued today recommends that all metal on metal hip recipients are now monitored on an annual basis (blood tests and MRI scans).
Cobalt and chromium ions can seep into the tissues of patients with “metal on metal” (MoM) hip implants, causing local reactions that destroy muscle and bone. There are real concerns that it is leaving some people with long term disability. The studies show that metal ions can contaminate the bloodstream, lymph nodes, spleen, liver and kidneys, before leaving the body as urine.
It remains to be seen whether other metal on metal products in addition to the DePuy ASR design, such as Pinnacle, are also withdrawn from the market.
If you have been affected by problems caused by these hip implants please contact Tristan Holdom at Tollers on 01604-258-175 or tristan.holdom@tollers.co.uk . Tristan is coordinating the people we are assisting in the Group Action.
Tollers have or are involved in a number of group action claims involving medical products that failed. An example is the PIP Breast Implant.
