The family of a father and son killed in a car crash said today that their loss was “beyond belief” as the boy’s mother and nine-year-old sister recover in hospital.
Ethan Sarkar, 14, and his father Derek, 46, from Birmingham, died when their Volkswagen Golf collided head-on with a Volvo on the A614 near East Cowick, East Yorkshire, on Saturday.
The driver of the Volvo, Sheila Stavert-Lee, 70, from Wigginton, near York, was also killed.
Mr Sarkar’s wife, Karen, 43, and daughter, Abbie, were airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary after the crash, which happened on a bridge over a canal.
The Sarkar family said in a statement: “We are saddened and distraught with the loss of two members of our family, Derek and Ethan.
“We are still shocked by the nature of the incident and all our prayers and efforts are currently directed to supporting his wife and daughter make a full and speedy recovery and helping them cope with their loss.
“Derek was a wonderful father, husband and a lively and central part of our family. Ethan was at the heart of all our lives, their loss to us is beyond belief.
“We thank all Derek and Ethan’s friends for their kind words, thoughts and support, they mean a lot to us and we know they will be missed by all of you.
“We also understand that there is a third victim in this tragic accident and our hearts and thoughts go out to her family and friends.
“We are aware that there is media interest in the story and we ask that the family and our friends be left in peace to grieve.
“Once again we thank you all for your kind messages, thoughts and prayers.”
Humberside Police described Mrs Sarkar’s condition today as “poorly” and said Abbie was “stable”.
Police said it appeared that Mrs Stavert-Lee’s car crossed on to the wrong side of the carriageway, into the path of the Sarkars’ Golf.
Mrs Stavert-Lee’s daughter told rescuers that her mother had been on the way to see her husband in Doncaster Prison.
