Stapleford woman paralysed in horse-riding accident makes incredible recovery

A WOMAN who broke her spine in a horse-riding accident has made an amazing recovery.
Lucy Hunt was rushed to hospital with no feeling in her legs after she was crushed by her horse, Spider, on July 27 last year.
She broke her sacrum – a bone between the coccyx and spine – and couldn’t move below the waist.
But Lucy has now recovered following an eight-hour operation at the Queen’s Medical Centre.
Lucy is even aiming to compete in the 48-mile Great Notts Bike Ride next weekend.
Lucy, who turns 25 today, said: “I was left on the floor in excruciating pain. I couldn’t feel anything in my legs and thought I was permanently paralysed.
“They couldn’t operate for two days as it required a specialist surgeon.
“It was awful, absolutely horrendous.”
Lucy spent six weeks in bed resting after the operation, then six more weeks in a wheelchair and a month on crutches before she began walking again in November.
Her partner, Kevin Burton, 24, then bought her a bike as a Christmas present to help with her recuperation and they have been riding around 15 miles a week together for the last six months.
Lucy, of Stapleford, will take part in the Great Notts Bike Ride with her friend Hannah Trickett, 23, and they are raising money for a charity which helps people with spinal injuries.
“Kevin and my mum and dad have been amazing.” Lucy said. “I cannot explain just how incredible they have been. Something like that does show you who your real friends are.”
