Coroner rules out asbestos link to man's cancer death

AN inquest found that a retired engineer did not die from asbestosis, despite being exposed to it during his career.

Michael Stephens, from Yew Tree Gardens in Nailsea, died at St Peter's Hospice in Brentry at 4.15am on December 17 last year.

He had been admitted to the hospice on November 23 with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, and was known to have had a history of exposure to asbestos.

Flax Bourton Coroner's Court heard that a post-mortem examination, that was carried out by pathologist Dr Karen Denton found Mr Stephens, who was 76, had a large cancerous tumour in his right lung.

The examination also showed that he had had pneumonia around the tumour, but that asbestos had not been the cause of the cancer.

Assistant deputy coroner Phillip Howells ruled that Mr Stephens, who was married to Jean, had died from lung cancer and that his death occurred as a result of natural causes.
