Whitby man, 21, killed in North Yorkshire road accident


A WHITBY man has been killed in a road accident.
North Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses following the fatal collision on the A169 between Whitby and Pickering.
The incident occurred at around 8.30pm on Friday when a yellow Peugeot 106 left the road and hit a tree at the bottom of Saltersgate Bank, near the Old Saltersgate Inn.
The driver of the Peugeot, the 21-year-old from Whitby, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 23-year-old man from Whitby who was a passenger in the vehicle was injured in the incident and was airlifted to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough for treatment. However, his injuries were not life threatening and he has since been discharged from hospital.
Another passenger, a 22-year-old man from Whitby was taken to Scarborough General Hospital suffering from a bruised jaw.
Another man from Whitby who was also a passenger in the vehicle suffered a minor injury which did not require hospital treatment.
Officers are appealing to anyone who can help establish how the collision occurred to contact them with information.
Traffic Constable Neil Cholmondeley, of North Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Group, said: “I urge anyone who witnessed the collision itself or saw the yellow Peugeot prior to the collision, to contact the police as soon as possible.
“The vehicle had travelled from the direction of Whitby towards Pickering and it is important that anyone who saw it at any stage along its journey gets in touch. Any information could be vital to the investigation.”
