Skin cancer rates in Sheffield are "significantly higher" than the national average for England, health officials in the city have warned.
NHS Sheffield has issued the alert as part of a campaign to warn young people of the dangers of exposure to the sun.
Nationally, the number of people aged 15 to 35 diagnosed with melanoma has tripled since the late 1970s.
In Sheffield, 112 people were diagnosed with malignant melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, in 2010.
A spokesman for NHS Sheffield said: "Rates of malignant melanoma cancers in the city are significantly higher than the average for the England."
Children 'vulnerable'
Sheffield GP Dr Anthony Gore said: "Everyone enjoys being out in the sunshine, but just because a tan looks good and feels good that doesn't mean it's healthy for you or your skin.
"Anyone wanting to stay safe in the sun can do so by following a few simple tips: spending time in the shade when the sun's rays are at their most intense between 11am and 3pm, using factor 15+ sunscreen, and covering more at-risk areas up with t-shirts, hats and sunglasses.
"Babies and young children are much more vulnerable to the damaging effects of the sun's rays as they have delicate, thinner skin, so be sure to protect them by keeping them out of direct sunlight, applying factor 15+ sunscreen to their skin and putting on sunhats to shield their faces from burns."
New laws introduced in 2010 now mean that under-18s are banned from using sunbeds in tanning salons, gyms and leisure centres.
Dr Gore said: "The under-18 sunbed tan ban is really good news as young skin isn't properly formed, and it's a powerful way to send a clear message out that youngsters shouldn't overexpose their skin to intensely harmful UV rays."
A sun awareness campaign will run throughout May at local pharmacies across Sheffield.

Scientist thanks doctors who saved his life after car crash
A 75-year-old man knocked down on a zebra crossing has thanked a doctor who he says he helped to save his life.
Keith Ackers was on his way home from the shops on April 16 when a van crashed into the back of a pick-up truck which had stopped to let him use the crossing on Liverpool Road, Longton. The pick-up truck then struck Dr Ackers.
He was thrown 12ft through the air and suffered multiple injuries, including a fractured shoulder and a bruised lung. Dr Ackers, who lives in Longton, said: “I stopped at the zebra crossing and the traffic stopped both ways.
“I acknowledged them and started to walk across. The next thing I knew was an almighty bang and I was thrown through the air.
“A white van had smashed into the back of a stationary white Ford Ranger pick-up truck, which then hit me with considerable force.”
Dr Ackers, a semi-retired experimental physicist, said a passing doctor helped him to stay conscious while emergency services arrived at the scene.
He said: “I’m convinced by doing that, she saved my life.”
Dr Ackers was kept in Royal Preston Hospital overnight for treatment.
He has thanked the paramedics, hospital staff and police who helped him after the accident.

Tributes paid to 'wonderful father' killed in crash on Lincolnshire road
TRIBUTES are pouring in to a "fantastic guy" as mourners say goodbye to a father and friend.
Timothy Igoea, a 44-year-old Heighington man, suffered head injuries when he was hit by a Ford Transit van at 3.25pm on Friday last week.
The incident happened at the junction of Sheepwash Lane, Station Road and Branston Road, in Heighington, near Lincoln.
He was taken to Lincoln County Hospital, but died a short time later.
Mourners have begun laying flowers at the site of the accident and friends have created a Facebook group to share their memories and leave their condolences.
Mr Igoea, or "Iggy" to his friends, was a motorcycle enthusiast and has been described by mourners as a "brave and determined man" who touched the lives of all who knew him.
Some people chose to share poems in honour of Mr Igoea, while others told their favourite stories of times spent with him.
Tracy Kinder, who also shared pictures of Mr Igoea on the tribute group, wrote: "I have never known anybody as kind and loving.
"He changed my life in so many ways and I'll be eternally thankful. I just hope I brought as much pleasure to his life as he did to mine. Love you always Tim."
Another mourner, Lynn Hind, wrote: "Knowing that there are so many people out there saddened by this sad news is a comfort to Tim's family and myself.
"Tim was a lovely guy and the most courageous person I know.
"He was a wonderful father and a great friend. He will leave a huge void in our lives.
"Look outside – he is the brightest star you will see."
Neil Brackenbury wrote a special tribute message on behalf of himself and his wife, Elaine.
He wrote: "It's taken two days for this terrible news to sink in and then to be able to write a tribute.
"Our thoughts are with all the family and friends. A true friend sadly missed, but never forgotten."
To view the tribute group, search "tribute to Timothy Igoea" on Facebook.
The incident was one of a series of road crashes over the Bank Holiday weekend.
In another accident at about 5am on Saturday, a blue Vauxhall Vectra hit a tree when it left the A52 at Osbournby, near Sleaford.
A 21-year-old female passenger died from her injuries while en route to Boston Pilgrim Hospital.
A 24-year-old man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Lincolnshire Police are still appealing for witnesses to both of these incidents.

French regulator confirms non-toxicity of PIP breast implants
The French medical device regulator, AFSSAPS, has released the findings of comprehensive testing carried out on Poly Implant Prosthese (PIP) silicone breast implants following health concerns raised in 2010.
These results confirm the UK findings reported in September last year that there was no evidence of genotoxicity (potential for cancer) or chemical toxicity of the filler material inside the devices.
PIP was one of the major breast implant manufactures for the UK and approximately 40,000 women in the UK have been implanted with PIP silicone breast implants (80,000 implants). Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) Clinical Director for Devices, Dr
Susanne Ludgate, said: "We wanted to identify any potential toxicity associated with the implant filler as soon as possible, to protect the health of anyone who had used it."
"We are extremely pleased that these further tests have again found no dangerous substances".
"This action is part of the MHRAs ongoing goal to keep watch over medicines and medical devices, and take any action needed to protect the public as swiftly as possible if there are any health issues."
"We are pleased that women in the UK with these implants can be reassured as a result of these findings."
